So Hoos Asking: Who’s the boot-wearing mascot at JPJ?

Fans in the stands at recent basketball games at the University of Virginia’s John Paul Jones Arena may have left with one burning question: Who was the mascot that joined Cavman on the court during halftime?

“I thought it was a Ting worker,” one Reddit user commented on a post asking the same question.

But the mascot isn’t looking to install your internet. He represents country musician Luke Combs.

“The Luke Combs mascot decided to come hang out with Cavman to build awareness for Luke Combs’ upcoming concert for his ‘My Kinda Saturday Night Tour’ at Scott Stadium,” Haley Schark, a marketing manager at JPJ, said.

The concert, on April 4, is the first at Scott Stadium in nearly a decade.

Although we now know who the mascot is, it’s still a mystery who wears the costume.

“We cannot disclose who is inside the suit. Just like Cavman, their identity isn’t public,” Schark said.

We can disclose who is on the “My Kinda Saturday Night Tour,” however. Dierks Bentley, Ty Myers, Jake Worthington and Thelma & James will open the Charlottesville stop of the tour.

The show is the first since 2017 when Scott Stadium hosted the Concert for Charlottesville, organized by Dave Matthews with performances by Ariana Grande, Chris Stapleton and Pharrell Williams, among others.

U2 played Scott Stadium in 2009, and the Rolling Stones performed there in 2005. In 2001, Neil Young – along with Dave Matthews – also had a concert.

Combs, the only country artist to have four diamond-certified songs, is known for hits like “Beautiful Crazy” and “When It Rains It Pours.” In 2023, his cover of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car” went viral, culminating in the two performing the song at the 2024 Grammy Awards.
