Poet Brenda Hillman, who is the University of Virginia’s 2021 Kapnick Distinguished Writer-in-Residence – though she will be “residing” virtually this spring – wants you to know that poetry can add something to every day, and not just momentous occasions marked by pandemics or inaugurations.
During her time at the University, she will share with the public what she calls a “poetry toolkit,” which can be helpful to readers and writers, and anyone, at any point in life.
Along with reading her poetry in April, Hillman will give three webinars in February, in which she will present her “Six M’s” of poetic thinking – metaphor, metonymy, meaning, mystery, magic and morality – to refresh the practice of reading and writing poetry for the general reader, as well as for the advanced student of poetry.
