When the all-time winningest coach in University of Virginia men’s basketball history was told his name was going to be emblazoned on the court at John Paul Jones Arena, Tony Bennett asked if he could have company.
The Cavalier leader of 15 seasons said he wanted “every name of every manager, walk-on, (scholarship) player, support staff, coaches” printed within the large replica of his signature on the JPJ floor.
On Saturday, before 鶹ƽ game against the University of Miami, Bennett was delighted to reveal that his request was granted.
“Forever,” Bennett said, “we’ll be on that court together.”
A number of Bennett’s former players – including Malcolm Brogdon, Joe Harris, Anthony Gill, London Perrantes and Jay Huff – and staff members were among the sold-out crowd at JPJ that arrived early for the special court dedication ceremony.
It jump-started a memorable afternoon that ended with the thanks to Chance Mallory’s clutch free throws with 3.6 seconds remaining.
