A little over two years ago, when his 1-year-old daughter had an ear infection that just wouldnât go away, University of Virginia alumnus Andy Schoonover heard from an ear, nose and throat specialist that she had a perforated eardrum and needed tubes in her ears.
So Schoonover and his wife, Stephanie, took their daughter for what they thought would be a fairly straightforward and painless procedure.
Medically speaking, it was. Financially speaking, not so much.
Shortly after the procedure, which lasted all of 15 minutes, the Schoonoverâs received a bill â for $8,000.
âI was shocked by the price tag, but assumed my insurance company would pick up the tab,â Schoonover said. âUnfortunately, they said it was medically unnecessary and refused to pay the bill.â
âI called them and told them I quit. If they werenât going to step up and help pay the bills when I needed them to, then I wasnât interested in paying them the $1,200 a month for their services.â
