University of Virginia athletic teams won more than 68% of their contests in the 2025-26 athletic year, capturing the Virginia Sports Information Directors University Division All-Sport Survey.
The Cavaliers went 309-137-10, winning the title for the third time in the last four years and the 20th time since the award was created in the 1978-79 athletic year.
Liberty University, which won the 2024-25 survey, finished second, winning 62.7% of its contests after a 224-131-10 season. The University of Richmond was third with a 61.4% winning percentage.
Cavalier teams had the state’s top records in both men’s and women’s sports.

Across five rulings, Aditya Bamzai had 14 citations, Saikrishna Prakash had seven, Caleb Nelson had three, and Lawrence B. Solum had one. Professors emeriti A.E. Dick Howard had two citations, and Douglas Laycock had one.
All but Laycock were cited in Learning Resources Inc. v. Trump, and Bamzai’s , in support of neither party, was cited six times. “,” written by Bamzai and Prakash, was cited in both the majority opinion and Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s dissent in Trump v. Slaughter.
Matsumoto to lead American College of Radiology

Dr. Alan Matsumoto, a professor in the Department of Radiology and Medical Imaging, has been elected as president of the American College of Radiology. He took office May 6.
“Dr. Matsumoto is a trusted physician leader with a long record of service to the College and a clear commitment to quality, safety and patient-centered care,” the organization’s CEO, Dr. Dana Smetherman, said. “His experience across clinical practice, education and ACR governance will continue to be a valuable resource as we work to advance policies, products and services that help radiologists provide the highest quality patient care.”
Matsumoto has a history of leadership at both the national and local levels. He previously served as the American College of Radiology’s vice president and, more recently, chaired its Board of Chancellors. He also served as the chair of UVA Radiology from 2009 to 2024 and has been a key figure in establishing 鶹ƽ Focused Ultrasound Center of Excellence.
In 2024, UVA Radiology created a $3 million endowment in recognition of Matsumoto and his wife, Dr. Julie A. Matsumoto. The endowment aims to advance innovation and education in diagnostic and interventional radiology as well as the imaging sciences.
Neuropsychologist receives mentorship award named for her UVA mentor
In May, the Sports Neuropsychology Society presented Donna Broshek with its 2026 Barth Distinguished Mentor Award, the highest honor for a member who prioritizes mentoring and the development of others in sports neuropsychology.
The inaugural Barth Distinguished Mentor Award in 2024 recognized Jeffrey Barth, professor emeritus in 鶹ƽ Department of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences, for his enduring legacy in mentorship. Broshek became the second society member to be honored with the biennial award.

Broshek is the John Edward Fowler Professor of Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences. She serves as director of both the Neuropsychology Assessment Clinic and the Psychology Fellowship Program, is chief of the Psychology Division and vice chair of faculty affairs for the department.
She completed her internship and postdoctoral fellowship under Barth’s supervision at UVA. Their long working relationship and friendship lasted until his death in 2025. Broshek is a past president of the Sports Neuropsychology Society and currently serves as executive director.
In nomination letters, Broshek was noted as an “ideal role model,” someone whom many strive to emulate professionally and personally. Colleagues described her as a beloved, humble, authentic and dedicated mentor-clinician-scientist, who sees mentorship as an honor and privilege.
Corrosion expert earns Distinguished Scientist Award
John Scully, Charles Henderson Chaired Professor of Materials Science and Engineering, is one of two Virginia researchers selected for the Southeastern Universities Research Association’s 2026 Distinguished Scientist Award.

In announcing the award – the association’s highest honor recognizing research scientists who embody its mission of collaboration and scientific excellence – the association cited Scully’s global reputation as a corrosion expert.
Scully’s contributions to the understanding of materials degradation in harsh environments are significant across applications affecting human health, national defense, and energy and transportation infrastructure. His work has led to the invention of alloys for mitigating viral transmission, legacy lead pipe corrosion and subsequent lead exposure, and damage in aircraft and marine vehicles.
He has played a key role in several National Academy of Engineering study groups, most recently on the root cause of failure and collapse of the Arecibo Space Telescope.
Scully has collaborated on major research efforts, including the irradiation effects of corrosion in nuclear reactors with Los Alamos National Laboratory and additively manufactured alloys with the Naval Research and Development Establishment.
At UVA, he co-directs the Center for Electrochemical Science and Engineering. His research has led to more than 30,000 citations and is funded through government and private partners.
2016 paper on surgical robots earns ‘Test-of-Time Award’
Every day, surgical robots perform complex, minimally invasive procedures with great precision and control. They could also one day make care more accessible to rural patients, soldiers on the battlefield, even deep-sea or outer-space explorers, through the potential of remote operation
The catch: These robots can be vulnerable to cyberattacks and network instability, which could cause them to malfunction and harm patients.
“Surgical robots were originally introduced with the vision of making telesurgery possible in the future,” said Homa Alemzadeh, an associate professor at the School of Engineering and Applied Science. “However, the challenges of network security and reliability and overall robot resilience have still not made this possible in practice.”

In 2016, Alemzadeh, then a doctoral student, proposed solutions to the security problem in her paper, “Targeted Attacks on Teleoperated Surgical Robots: Dynamic Model-Based Detection and Mitigation.” A year later, she joined the faculty of 鶹ƽ Charles L. Brown Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
Now, she’s received the Dependable Systems and Networks 2026 Test-of-Time Award, which recognizes papers published a decade earlier that have had a “sustained and important impact on the theory and/or practice of dependable systems and networks.”
The paper pioneered the idea of anticipating the consequences of robot control commands in the cyber layer before they execute in the physical world, and of mitigating malicious commands before they compromise safety.
The work laid the groundwork for later efforts to secure robotic surgical systems. It also set Alemzadeh’s career trajectory and became the basis for a 2022 National Science Foundation CAREER Award.
Before Building Laboratory takes Best of Practice in Technology Award
The Architect’s Newspaper recently announced the winners of the sixth annual Best of Practice Awards, “celebrating the design studio itself” and recognizing the top companies and practices across North America that are thoughtfully shaping the built environment.

Selected as Best of Practice in Technology, , co-founded and directed by architecture professors Katie MacDonald and Kyle Schumann, is the first university lab to be honored as part of the program.
Jurors analyzed submissions including portfolios, office culture and social impact. Jack Murphy, editor in chief of The Architect’s Newspaper, praised Before Building Laboratory’s forward-looking impact. “This academic lab unites digital technology with low-carbon wood solutions,” he said. “This is important research for the future of the profession.”
