Welcome Hoos: The Class of 2029 arrives
Student: Dad, come get in.
Student: So, Iām moving into my freshman year, or first-year, dorm. Sorry. The drive was like pretty long, honestly. I think we drove for, like, 10 hours.
Family Member: Got up early, andā¦
Student: We did not get up early. Thatās a lie.
Student: The volunteers that were here helping us move in, especially when it was raining, it was really helpful to have them.
Family Member: At first, I did think he packed a lot. And I thought, āOh, this is not going to fit.ā We actually finished, and it looks pretty good.
Family Member: She was amazing. I didnāt have to do very much. Sheās extremely organized.
Student: Weāre from Charleston, South Carolina. I wanted to go somewhere new and meet new people. UVA was so welcoming. I went to some other schools, but nobody had the same, like, warmth.
Student: I grew up coming here to football games.
Student: Maybe ninth grade. Ever since then, I set my sights on UVA.
Student: I just wanted a school that had big school spirit. Also, I wanted something that was going to be academically challenging. And thatās what you get at UVA.
Student: Itās a very scenic Grounds. Yeah, except for the parts where you have to walk up hills constantly. Thatās the one thing.
Family Member: Does Grounds mean campus?
Student: Yes. Itās Grounds.
Student: But Iām just, you know, really excited to finally get on with this after waiting the whole summer.
Student: I really want to look into, like, intramurals and stuff. Iām a pretty competitive person. Maybe, like, volleyball, tennis. I know pickleball is on the rise.
Student: I like to volunteer in the community. So, I already signed up with Madison House. So, Iām hoping to do some volunteering.
Family Member: Weāre going to miss her energy in the house. For sure.
Family Member: Heās kind of funny. So, Iām going to miss, like, how funny he is.
Student: Iām going to miss the food, especially. I donāt think I can get that food anywhere else.
Family Member: Itāll be bittersweet.
Student: Iām going to miss my cat a lot.
Family Member: Oh, the cat.
Student: Iām going to miss you, but Iām also going to miss the cat.
Student: Iām going to miss my dog.
Family Member: I just plan to send pictures of the dog. And then maybe sheāll send me back a thumbs up, so Iāll know everythingās OK.
Family Member: Yeah, she got GPS on him. So, weāre going to know where he at.
Family Member: We shed some tears last night, just the two of us. I know you donāt know that.
Family Member: Itās really a mixed bag of emotions. Iām so happy and proud of her. But itās hard letting them go.
Family Member: Love the school, and it really gives me peace of mind knowing that her sister is going to be here, too. This is the baby. So, this oneās probably going toā¦
Student: Aw. Donāt cry.
Family Member: Very proud. Personality, smarts, heās going to be something.
Family Member: Heās always had that initiative and always got good grades. I know heās going to do very well.
Family Member: Overwhelmingly grateful that she has this opportunity. Obviously, for myself, Iām going to miss her every day.
Student: Iām not quite ready to be an adult, but Iā¦
Family Member: No, you are.
Student: At this point, Iāve just got to go out and do it.
