Lou Lopez, a soft-spoken man who coached from horseback, is retiring after 23 years as the University of Virginia鈥檚 club polo coach with 13 national championships 鈥 seven for the women鈥檚 team and six for the men鈥檚.
On horseback, Lopez worked with his players on maneuvers as they practiced them, even after a fall that made it more difficult.
鈥淚 just felt that it was time,鈥 Lopez said. 鈥淚 had a fall almost three years ago, and my reaction time is not what it used to be. I tried coaching from the sidelines, but to coach effectively, you have to be right out there.鈥
For Lopez, Virginia Polo was not just about the game.
鈥淚 tried to create an atmosphere here of camaraderie and leadership,鈥 he said. 鈥淭his includes respect for the animals 鈥 don鈥檛 treat them as vehicles. I tried to instill in them that you want to ride good horses.鈥
