UVA No. 1 in State For Students Studying Abroad

University of Virginia students are again enhancing their education through study-abroad opportunities after a decline due to the pandemic.

UVA ranked No. 1 in the state and among the top 25 doctoral-granting institutions in the country in the number of students studying abroad, according to the Open Doors report recently released by the Institute of International Education, a New York-based nonprofit.

“Global engagement for students is a long-standing goal for the University, and this dedication has helped us bounce back after the pandemic,” Steve Mull, �鶹�ƽ�� vice provost for global affairs, said. “We are also focused on making education abroad as affordable as possible for our students, as well as launching new, innovative programs. None of this would be possible without the support of the dedicated staff and faculty who lead many of these programs.”

The University was 21st in the nation for students earning credits in study-abroad courses, with close to 1,500 U.S. residents participating in those programs in the 2021-22 academic year. UVA students also took advantage of traveling for short-term courses, with more than 1,200 students traveling for non-credit programs, ranking UVA 10th among U.S. universities.

The U.S. State Department commissions the annual Open Doors report, which also tracks international students coming to U.S. higher education institutions. For the first time in 40 years, international enrollment in the U.S. grew by 14%. UVA saw a 7% growth with close to 3,000 international students studying on Grounds in the 2022-23 school year.
