Last week, the U.S. Food and Drug administration announced that the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine could be given to adolescents aged 12 to 15 years, expanding its previous emergency use authorization for individuals 16 and older.
Shortly afterward, UVA Health joined providers across the country in to that younger age group.
Writing for last week, University of Virginia associate professor of pediatrics Dr. Debbie-Ann Shirley addressed key questions that parents, teens or pre-teens might have about the vaccine and how it works in adolescents.
Here is what Shirley, who specializes in pediatric infectious diseases, had to say about seven key questions.
