News in brief: Students thank donors for their generosity

Marianne Jayaraj’s University of Virginia experience has been bolstered by donors who have helped fund her academic and social adventures.

“I’m a first-generation student,” the fourth-year McIntire School of Commerce student said. “I am here at one of the best business schools in the country, and I got to study in Hong Kong and Singapore. My scholarship has helped me, and also my family. Coming to UVA was the best decision I’ve made in my life.”

Jayaraj was one of more than 1,200 Hoos who in late April wrote thank-you notes and recorded thank-you videos at the McIntire Amphitheatre for donors who support not only students like her, but also all facets of UVA.

Sasha Monty, director of donor relations, said 鶹ƽ benefactors love supporting the University, but they especially enjoy hearing from students. And it’s important for students to understand how philanthropy expands their opportunities, Monty said.

“We’re working to build connection and community by prompting students to pause and reflect on what makes their UVA experience so special,” Monty said, “and how the broader UVA community – and especially our donors – help make those experiences possible.”

Allie Gibson, of 鶹ƽ external relations, contributed to this story.
