Gov. Spanberger appoints 10 members to the UVA Board of Visitors

Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger on Saturday announced the appointments of 10 members to the University of Virginia Board of Visitors. The new members assumed their roles Saturday. The appointments are subject to General Assembly approval.

The new members:

Michael C. Bisceglia

Michael C. Bisceglia, of Richmond, president and co-founder of Stauer, Watch and Jewelry Company, and president and founder of Metrix Media. Bisceglia holds a bachelor’s degree from the UVA College of Arts & Sciences.

Carlos M. Brown Jr.

Carlos M. Brown Jr., of Glen Allen, executive vice president, chief administrative and projects officer, and corporate secretary of Dominion Energy. Brown holds a bachelor’s degree from the UVA College of Arts & Sciences and a juris doctorate from the UVA School of Law. Brown previously served on Âé¶ąĆĆ˝â°ć Board of Visitors from 2021-25, serving as vice rector beginning in 2023.

Robert G. Byron

Robert G. Byron, of Charlottesville, chair, co-CEO and co-founder of Blue Vista Capital Management. Byron holds a bachelor’s degree from the UVA College of Arts & Sciences and a juris doctorate from the UVA School of Law.

Peter M. Grant II

Peter M. Grant II, of Charlottesville, founding partner of Anchormarck Holdings LLC and vice chair of Expedition Trust Company. Grant holds a bachelor’s degree from the UVA College of Arts & Sciences and a Master of Business Administration degree from the UVA Darden School of Business.

Owen D. Griffin Jr.

Owen D. Griffin Jr., of Suffolk, president and chief financial officer of Currie Medical. Griffin holds a bachelor’s degree from the UVA McIntire School of Commerce, a master’s degree from the UVA Graduate School of Arts & Sciences and a Master of Business Administration degree from the UVA Darden School of Business.

Victoria D. Harker

Victoria D. Harker, of McLean, former executive vice president and chief financial officer of Tegna Inc. Harker holds a bachelor’s degree from the UVA College of Arts & Sciences and a Master of Business Administration degree from American University. Harker previously served on Âé¶ąĆĆ˝â°ć Board of Visitors from 2012-16.

Elizabeth H. Hayes

Elizabeth H. Hayes, of Arlington, retired equity partner at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP in Washington, D.C. Hayes holds a bachelor’s degree from Emory University and a juris doctorate from the UVA School of Law.

Rudene M. Haynes

Rudene M. Haynes, of Midlothian, managing partner of Hunton Andrews Kurth LLP’s Richmond office. Haynes holds a bachelor’s degree from the UVA College of Arts & Sciences and a juris doctorate from the University of Texas School of Law.

C. Evans Poston Jr.

C. Evans Poston Jr., of Norfolk, director of federal and state affairs for Troutman Strategies. Poston holds a bachelor’s degree from the College of William & Mary, a Master of Public Administration degree from Old Dominion University, and a Master of Business Administration degree from the UVA Darden School of Business. Poston previously served on Âé¶ąĆĆ˝â°ć Board of Visitors from 2018-22.

Mohsin Syed

Mohsin Syed, of Arlington, senior adviser at Westexec Advisors. Syed holds a bachelor’s degree from the UVA College of Arts & Sciences and a juris doctorate from the UVA School of Law.

“On behalf of the University, I want to welcome the new members of the Board of Visitors and thank them for their willingness to serve,” University President Scott Beardsley said. “University leaders and I look forward to working alongside Gov. Spanberger and her appointees, as well as the General Assembly, to strengthen the University and advance our mission for education, research, patient care and public service.” 

The appointments bring the Board of Visitors to a full complement of 17 members, filling five prior vacancies on the board along with five positions made vacant following the recent resignations of Rector Rachel W. Sheridan, Vice Rector Porter N. Wilkinson, Dr. Stephen P. Long, Paul B. Manning and Douglas D. Wetmore.

“I am deeply grateful to our departing board members, who gave generously of their time and expertise to serve the University we all love,” Beardsley said.

The board will elect two members to the positions of rector and vice rector in a special meeting to be scheduled in the coming days.
