Dancing on: UVA women’s basketball advances to Sweet 16

The University of Virginia women’s basketball team has a flair for the dramatic.

A knack for winning, too.

The 10th-seeded Cavaliers have gone from the First Four to the Sweet 16 after a dramatic, double overtime, 83-75 win over the second-seeded University of Iowa on Monday in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, played at a sold-out Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City.

Monday was more of the same – and then some, as the Hoos (22-11) stunned the host Hawkeyes (27-7) in front of 15,000 fans.

UVA first overcame a nine-point deficit in the final 8:07 of regulation to force the initial extra session. And then, with 13 seconds left in the first overtime, Kymora Johnson hit a running jump shot to tie the game at 65.

A Paris Clark layup with 3:38 remaining in the second overtime gave the Cavaliers a lead they’d never relinquish.

Johnson played all 50 minutes and scored 28 points, while Clark saved 15 of her 20 points until after the start of the fourth quarter.

Since the First Four became a part of the NCAA women’s tournament in 2022, no team had ever advanced from that round to the Sweet 16.

Until now.

The Hoos will next travel to Sacramento for a regional semifinal game on Saturday against third-seeded Texas Christian University.
