I originally conceived this course as how to take material culture from one world and present it in another world.
Samuel Zeiden
In curating culture class, we are curating a exhibition for the Fralin Museum. The artifacts that we are creating an exhibition for are yads. They are Jewish Torah pointers used to read the Torah.

What I love about teaching this class is that students aren’t just in a classroom, they’re out in the world doing stuff. We were able to celebrate the holiday of Sukkot and put the finishing touches on the sukkah that we had built.
Ben Gering
From visiting the storage facility for the museum, to attending the Jewish Torah service to talking with different people, it’s really extended the experience of the class beyond the classroom.
Emma Pietsch
There’s more of a beauty looking at the pieces in person that you can’t get out of articles.
Zeiden
Growing up in Jewish Studies class, we read books and, like, ancient stories. Stories make us feel good. But in order to really, really believe in something, I feel like I need to see it.
Dobrin
Cultural sensitivity is not just not stepping on toes, but actually really understanding.
Gering
This class has taught me a lot about listening, and about trying to include different voices, and how to engage with everybody in a way that’s respectful.
Dobrin
Culture is not a bunch of isolated facts. You really need to have a sense of the whole. I know that they will never look at any kind of exhibition the same way.
