A team of University of Virginia students now know what it takes to think like a Federal Reserve board member.
Comprising mostly economics majors, the team finished third, behind Princeton and Harvard universities, in this year’s Federal Reserve College Challenge. This is the highest a UVA team has ever scored since first entering the challenge in 2016.
The UVA team will travel to the Federal Reserve, the country’s central bank, in Washington, D.C., on Feb. 7 to meet with Fed Chairman Jerome Powell.
“The Federal Reserve Challenge is hosted by the Federal Reserve Bank to get college students better understanding how they actually do the job, in terms of looking at the economic data such as inflation and what they should do with interest rates,” said the team’s coach, Carter Doyle, an associate professor of economics who teaches about the Federal Reserve in his Money and Banking courses.
