Not many take both finance and public policy students on field trips into Appalachia, but Stephanie Randolph does.
Randolph taught impact investing during the University of Virginia’s January term by bringing 14 students out of the classroom and putting them face-to-face with investors and entrepreneurs in Appalachia.
“This opportunity gets them into rural communities so they can see how impact investing can work, in reality,” she said. “Community and economic development are messy and policy is messy. But they must work together, especially in economically distressed communities. The textbook approaches do not easily translate into reality. Impact investing is a series of tools that can facilitate opportunity and growth.”
