The Fourth National Collegiate Tournament

The University of Virginia is honored in being awarded the sponsorship of the National Collegiate boxing tournament for the second time in four tournament years. Intercollegiate competition was fostered here early in the history of college boxing in the South, and tournament officials, contestants and guests are extended a warm welcome to a leading center of the sport.

The first National Collegiate tournament was held at Penn State in 1932 to qualify college boxers for final Olympic team trials. The second tournament was held at the University of Virginia in the Olympic year of 1936, when it was established on an annual basis and sponsored last year by the California Aggies.

Supervised by recognized leaders in intercollegiate athletics and founded on the finest tradition of sportsmanship, the National Collegiate tournament serves the natural and fitting role of bringing together a select group of college boxers from all sections of the country for national championship competition.

This year’s tournament embraces a total of fifty-five contestants from twenty-one colleges and universities in fifteen States.

Southern Conference Boxing Tournament

There were many pleasing features at the Southern Conference boxing tournament which was held for the second successive year at the University of Maryland at College Park on February 25 and 26.

Probably the outstanding and most delectable angle was the fact that there were few knockouts during the tourney, and not one occurred in the eight final bouts. This points to the tendency of the coaches to teach boxing, rather than just slugging, and is a fact that augers well for its future in college athletics. Some cynics of college boxing are eager to find elements to attack the sport.

Still another telling factor in favor of the ring game as a college sport was the fine sportsmanship displayed among the coaches and participants, there not being a single incident that might be criticized. And it might be added here that the officiating was of high order and performed to the satisfaction of all concerned.

It was a real tournament, too, from the standpoint of competition, and the race for team honors was wide open going into the final matches.

Clemson's triumph with sixteen points took the team title to the far Southern end of the Conference for the first time, with The Citadel making it solid for that section by finishing second with eleven points. Duke, doing the remarkable by winning two individual titles with four entrants, placed third with ten points. Maryland, relinquishing the team championship title, North Carolina and South Carolina scored eight points each, with North Carolina State bagging three.

Scientific boxing got its reward when Benny Alperstein, Maryland's 125-pound boxer par excellence, was voted by the coaches as the outstanding contestant in the tournament.

In view of the success of the Clemson team, and the fine showing made by The Citadel and South Carolina, it seems certain that the 1939 tournament will go to one of the schools in the Palmetto State. It is now regarded as logical for the tourney to rotate and to be held at a central point in Conference territory.

Southeastern Conference Boxing Tournament

Cradled in New Orleans, the Southeastern Conference boxing tournament in five years has assumed a position of importance rivaling the firmly established basketball tournament which long had been king of intercollegiate tournaments.

Held each year at Tulane University, the tournament, from a well conducted but slimly attended inaugural affair, has grown to attract capacity crowds in the handsome Green Wave gymnasium.

The color, crowds, thrills and well organized details each year has won new fans and held the old ones, too.

Despite the fact that Tulane has three times won the team title, and L. S. U. has twice won the crown, the teams from all institutions have gone into the meet with well founded ambitions of victory.

Yet, capable and impartial officiating, conducted the past two years by highly regarded Eastern officials, has left no one with cause for complaint.

Dr. Wilbur C. Smith, Tulane athletic director, as tournament chairman, and Josh Cody, Florida athletic director, as vice-chairman, handling the arrangements for the past two years saw the tournament grow to proportions undreamed of a few years back when hundreds instead of thousands attended.

Besides Tulane and L. S. U., Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi State, University of Mississippi, University of Tennessee, Auburn and Kentucky have competed. The only institutions failing to send representatives were those having no intercollegiate ring program.

These tournaments annually have produced capable champions, including Doyless Hill, Al Justrabo, Mike Maroun, Sam Jacobs, Joe Brocato, George Manteris and Cameron Gamble of Tulane; Henry Glaze, Eddie Ketchum, Fred O’Banion, J. T. Golsan, Heston Daniel and Joe Fields of L. S. U.; Paul Bullard, Chandler Page, Bert Reddoch, Carl Inman and Harry Mullins of Mississippi State; Bob Sullivan, Max Radutzky, “Buster” Eisenberg and Henry Frederiksen of Georgia; Steve Wilkerson of Ole Miss; Art Fowler and Tony Di Carlo of Alabama; Bill Tunnell of Tennessee; L. S. Rentz, Jack Long and H. H. Graham of Florida, and others.

The Eastern Tournament

Forty-two boxers from seven colleges took part in the fifteenth annual tournament of the Eastern Intercollegiate Boxing Association. The two-day tourney, held in Penn State’s spacious Recreation Hall, was attended by approximately 8,500 fans and was judged one of the most successful in the long history of the Association.

The presence of a full team from Dartmouth added considerable interest to the affair, and the breaking of the Syracuse-Penn State monopoly on the championships by a rugged group of Cadets from the United States Military Academy was a surprise climax.

Army’s legions marched off with three individual titles and a total of twenty-three points. Syracuse, the defending team champions, scored eighteen; Penn State was third with twelve; Cornell’s two individual winners gained ten points for the Big Red; Western Maryland scored five, and Yale four. Dartmouth’s entries failed to score a point, probably because the Hanover boys had no intercollegiate competition this season. However, the green-clad ringmen made a big hit with the crowd because of their gameness and fine sportsmanship.

Army’s team victory prevented Syracuse from gaining permanent possession of the Baltimore Sun trophy which must be won five times to be permanently retired. Both Penn State and the Orange have four legs on the bronze statuette.

Boxing in the 1938 tournament was of high calibre, there being relatively few “slug-fests” and only three technical knockouts recorded. Probably the most exciting bout of all was between Ord Fink, Syracuse Olympic team member and defending champion at 165 pounds, and Heber Lessig of Penn State. Science was forgotten in this battle as both boys refused to step back and rocked each other with lefts and rights for three complete rounds. Fink won the decision, but was probably weakened for his championship bout with Captain Bert Harrison, of West Point, on the following evening. At any rate, it was necessary for him to take part in another bout, filled with furious action and he lost this decision by the closest possible margin.

It seemed the general opinion at the ringside that the two outstanding boxers in the tournament were Cornell’s champions, Moe Goldbas, at 126 pounds; and Fred Siemer, victor over a fine crop of heavyweights. Under the direction of Allie Wolff, a former Penn State champion, Cornell is coming to the front among the eastern colleges, and is certain to become a power in the east within the next few years.
