When Kody Grant got the job offer, he wept.

Grant didn鈥檛 expect to be the tribal liaison at the University of Virginia. A self-described nontraditional learner, he earned his GED and then an associate鈥檚 degree in his 30s. He worked as an actor and interpreter in Colonial Williamsburg, helping its foundation decide how to cover Native American history.

After each round of interviews for the UVA job, he told himself he was glad to have the chance to talk to University faculty and staff. If it went any further, that was great. If it didn鈥檛, at least he had the experience.

Great won out.

鈥淚鈥檓 very honored and privileged to have the opportunity,鈥 Grant said. 鈥淢y earnest hope is that I can do this work to such a degree that it does other folks justice.鈥

The role as tribal liaison formalizes work Grant previously did at Colonial Williamsburg where he reached out to citizens of other tribes independently, working to get what they wanted and needed from the foundation.

鈥淚 found this passion for being the background person. I didn鈥檛 want to be on stage anymore,鈥 he said.

The UVA position has been in the works for several years, said search committee co-chair and assistant professor of environmental science Lauren Miller, a citizen of the Choctaw nation. As tribal liaison, Grant will be the go-between for the University and Virginia tribes.

鈥淭his is a chance for us to be a resource hub for tribes, however the tribes need it,鈥 Miller said.

Members of the UVA community have long worked to highlight Indigenous voices and include them at the University. But historically, UVA faculty and staff members have performed the duties of a tribal liaison on an ad hoc, volunteer basis.

Grant鈥檚 task is to help build relationships with local Native American groups, work with Indigenous students who want to come to UVA, help develop curriculum and work in consultation with tribes on issues such as research on Indigenous lands and with Indigenous peoples. He will act as an 鈥渋nformation broker,鈥 helping people inside and outside of UVA communicate with each other.

Grant will also be a 鈥減oint person鈥 for faculty, staff, students and alumni, someone they can turn to with questions on tribal matters.

鈥淢y goal is to use history to help modern Americans understand their neighbors,鈥 Grant said. Too often, he said, Americans鈥 understanding of Indigenous history starts and ends with colonization.

Grant believes his nontraditional experience in higher education is an asset. Only about a quarter of Native American students receive a degree after enrolling at a four-year institution, compared to 44% of white students, according to the Postsecondary National Policy Institute.

Grant said one reason is that many Native students have spent their lives on reservations and college can be a culture shock. Grant will help them navigate the changes and adjust. He wants them to know that the path to a UVA degree is open for them.

He hopes to help Indigenous students build a supportive community, which can increase their chances of earning a bachelor鈥檚 degree.

鈥淚'm somebody who鈥檚 there to say hello, to check up on you, to see if you need anything,鈥 Grant said.

Grant says he looks forward to being able to tailor the new position to serve the Indigenous community鈥檚 needs. He hopes to form beneficial relationships between the University and local Virginia tribes.

Above all, he said, he wants to serve the community. That includes UVA as well as Indigenous groups.

鈥淚 want to do all things in service to community,鈥 Grant said.
