News in brief: UVA men’s tennis duo captures NCAA title

Another year, another University of Virginia tennis duo captures a national doubles championship.

鶹ƽ Dylan Dietrich and Måns Dahlberg won . In 2024, two members of the UVA women’s team – Elaine Chervinsky and Melodie Collard – also won an NCAA doubles title.

Dietrich and Dahlberg join Dom Inglot and Michael Shabaz (2009), Shabaz and Drew Courtney (2010) and Jarmere Jenkins and Mac Stylslinger (2013) as UVA men’s doubles teams to win NCAA titles.

On Sunday, Dietrich, a junior, and Dahlburg, a senior, topped Ohio State University’s Nikita Filin and Brandon Carpico in straight sets, 7-6, 6-2. It capped an impressive run in Orlando, which included a second-round, straight-set win over Mississippi State University’s Benito Sanchez Martinez and Petar Jovanovic, the tournament’s top-seeded team, on Thursday.

“It is pretty surreal to be an NCAA doubles champion, although (UVA assistant coach) Trent (Huey) always said he believes in us,” Dietrich said.

This was the second year of a pilot program to hold the NCAA individual championships in the fall instead of in the spring at the end of the NCAA team championships.
