WEBVTT Kind: captions Language: en 00:00:01.760 --> 00:00:06.540 We are in an ironic moment in American democracy. We are more connected than 00:00:06.540 --> 00:00:10.620 ever, but we are objectively more polarized perhaps than we've ever been. 00:00:10.620 --> 00:00:15.450 Have we ever been in a situation like that? Of course. Think about the Civil War, 00:00:15.450 --> 00:00:19.740 the Great Depression, the civil rights movement, debates over the Vietnam War. 00:00:19.740 --> 00:00:23.880 All of these are moments where the American populace felt that something 00:00:23.880 --> 00:00:28.320 important was at stake and there was a great deal of friction about the right 00:00:28.320 --> 00:00:32.669 way to move forward. What we need to make sure though, is that the institutions 00:00:32.669 --> 00:00:36.930 that carried us through some of those prior struggles, remain strong enough to 00:00:36.930 --> 00:00:42.600 get us through this. The University of Virginia was created in the cradle of 00:00:42.600 --> 00:00:47.100 democracy by those who founded our democracy. It has continued to be the 00:00:47.100 --> 00:00:52.920 place to go to to study current democratic issues. The Democracy 00:00:52.920 --> 00:00:56.969 Initiative is a brand-new, cross university initiative, it's going to 00:00:56.969 --> 00:01:00.960 bring together the best assets at the University of Virginia. That's going to 00:01:00.960 --> 00:01:05.790 give us the opportunity to bring diverse perspectives whether it's someone from 00:01:05.790 --> 00:01:11.130 anthropology, politics, economics, the law school and bringing the best of their 00:01:11.130 --> 00:01:16.710 experience to bear on these complex challenges. We want to engage with the 00:01:16.710 --> 00:01:19.920 public as well. One of the most exciting ways we'll do that will be the 00:01:19.920 --> 00:01:24.720 Presidential Ideas Festival. The Ideas Festival will bring leaders from public 00:01:24.720 --> 00:01:29.909 policy from around the world, including a past United States president, to better 00:01:29.909 --> 00:01:34.590 understand the challenges that confront us but also how we can move forward. In 00:01:34.590 --> 00:01:38.850 order to keep these institutions of government strong we have to keep asking 00:01:38.850 --> 00:01:45.390 questions of our democracy. Our country is not inevitable it is reliant upon our 00:01:45.390 --> 00:01:49.549 engagement and our commitment to it.
