WEBVTT Kind: captions Language: en 00:00:03.480 --> 00:00:06.670 Hi everyone, Jim Ryan here and I hope you’re having a good evening. 00:00:06.670 --> 00:00:10.490 I’d like to welcome you back to UVA Weekly: Episode 2. 00:00:10.490 --> 00:00:15.010 Our goal over the next few minutes is to bring you up to speed on how things are going at 00:00:15.010 --> 00:00:20.279 UVA and highlight the most important news of the week related to COVID-19 and this one-of-a-kind 00:00:20.279 --> 00:00:21.279 semester. 00:00:21.279 --> 00:00:25.330 Tonight, you’ll be hearing more about testing and quarantining, especially how students 00:00:25.330 --> 00:00:28.580 living off-Grounds should quarantine themselves if needed. 00:00:28.580 --> 00:00:33.330 You’ll also learn about updates to Â鶹Æƽâ°æ COVID dashboard, and get a better understanding 00:00:33.330 --> 00:00:36.470 of the metrics we continue to watch as the semester unfolds. 00:00:36.470 --> 00:00:41.030 But first, a quick update from me on some late breaking news: 00:00:41.030 --> 00:00:45.469 As you may have heard, through wastewater and regular testing, we’ve found 5 cases 00:00:45.469 --> 00:00:49.030 of COVID-19 in one of our residence halls—out of 188 students. 00:00:49.030 --> 00:00:54.710 The 5 students who tested positive are in isolation, and their close contacts are in 00:00:54.710 --> 00:00:55.750 quarantine. 00:00:55.750 --> 00:01:00.129 At the advice of our medical experts, we tested the entire residence hall last night. 00:01:00.129 --> 00:01:05.230 We are asking all residents to quarantine temporarily while they await test results, 00:01:05.230 --> 00:01:08.620 meaning that they will remain in their rooms except when retrieving meals or using the 00:01:08.620 --> 00:01:13.490 bathroom and attend classes remotely during this 24-48 hour period. 00:01:13.490 --> 00:01:18.790 We have also asked residents to wear masks essentially at all times except when they 00:01:18.790 --> 00:01:19.790 are sleeping. 00:01:19.790 --> 00:01:23.700 We expect to have results back as early as tonight, maybe even by the time you are watching 00:01:23.700 --> 00:01:24.840 this. 00:01:24.840 --> 00:01:30.010 As we’ve said all along, success this semester will depend in large part on our ability to 00:01:30.010 --> 00:01:34.670 stay a few steps ahead of the virus, which is what are trying to do by testing all students 00:01:34.670 --> 00:01:35.950 in this residence hall. 00:01:35.950 --> 00:01:40.760 The aim is to identify as quickly as possible anyone else who might test positive and to 00:01:40.760 --> 00:01:45.850 move them into isolation, and to move close contacts into quarantine space. 00:01:45.850 --> 00:01:51.530 We found out about these cases thanks, in part, to a program we have in place that tests 00:01:51.530 --> 00:01:53.830 the wastewater coming out of residence halls. 00:01:53.830 --> 00:01:59.610 It’s one of the ways we have to spot signs of possible infection early so we can hopefully 00:01:59.610 --> 00:02:02.920 prevent a few cases from becoming an outbreak. 00:02:02.920 --> 00:02:06.870 Over the next few weeks, we’re going to be doing even more to try and catch outbreaks 00:02:06.870 --> 00:02:12.370 before they happen—from testing random students on a daily basis, to conducting saliva screenings 00:02:12.370 --> 00:02:14.579 at locations all across Grounds. 00:02:14.579 --> 00:02:20.090 If you are called to take a test, please cooperate—you will not, I repeat not, get in trouble for 00:02:20.090 --> 00:02:21.909 testing positive. 00:02:21.909 --> 00:02:25.719 Speaking of positive tests, as you may have seen this afternoon, we’ve had an uptick 00:02:25.719 --> 00:02:29.659 in student cases reported today—52 new positives. 00:02:29.659 --> 00:02:35.700 This follows 3 days of very low positive cases—5 yesterday and 4 new cases on each of the two 00:02:35.700 --> 00:02:36.970 days before that. 00:02:36.970 --> 00:02:43.519 The swing 4 or 5 to 50 is not because of a spike in cases the last 24 hours but from 00:02:43.519 --> 00:02:48.790 some delays in getting test results back from earlier this week—the delay was caused by 00:02:48.790 --> 00:02:52.700 a software problem with one of our machines that has since been fixed. 00:02:52.700 --> 00:02:58.280 It is important to note that no matter how much testing we do, the best way to prevent 00:02:58.280 --> 00:03:00.480 an outbreak is to keep the virus from spreading. 00:03:00.480 --> 00:03:04.690 I am going to sound like a broken record, but it’s crucial to keep following the 00:03:04.690 --> 00:03:10.549 basic rules that you have heard before and hopefully know by heart: Stay 6 feet apart; 00:03:10.549 --> 00:03:14.510 wear a mask when you’re inside and when you’re outside and can’t be at least 6 00:03:14.510 --> 00:03:19.239 feet apart; wash your hands; don’t get together in groups of more than 15 people; and if you 00:03:19.239 --> 00:03:24.599 have symptoms, please self-quarantine until you can get tested—and please get tested 00:03:24.599 --> 00:03:26.049 right away. 00:03:26.049 --> 00:03:30.639 Finally, for those of you who are students, please know how impressed and grateful we 00:03:30.639 --> 00:03:34.760 all are that so many of you are taking this so seriously—at the same time you’re trying 00:03:34.760 --> 00:03:38.739 to make new friends, get used to new routines, and start new classes. 00:03:38.739 --> 00:03:42.590 I know it’s a challenge, but please keep it up, and we’ll do our best to set you 00:03:42.590 --> 00:03:43.730 up for success. 00:03:43.730 --> 00:03:45.340 That’s it for me. 00:03:45.340 --> 00:03:49.379 If you have questions or ideas for the next show, please reach out to my colleague Matt 00:03:49.379 --> 00:03:54.200 Weber at mw2xy@virginia.edu. 00:03:54.200 --> 00:03:58.800 And now I’ll turn it over to our rising internet star, fourth-year student Davion 00:03:58.800 --> 00:04:00.900 Zeno, to share his update. 00:04:00.900 --> 00:04:02.620 See you all next Thursday night. 00:04:02.620 --> 00:04:04.040 Thanks, and be well. 00:04:05.720 --> 00:04:09.290 That’s crazy, they actually invited me back. 00:04:09.290 --> 00:04:10.999 Hey look at us. 00:04:10.999 --> 00:04:12.200 Who would've thought. 00:04:12.200 --> 00:04:13.200 Not me. 00:04:13.200 --> 00:04:18.030 Needless to say, I am excited to be back with these weekly updates and collaborating with 00:04:18.030 --> 00:04:19.090 the Youva team. 00:04:19.090 --> 00:04:21.950 Let’s get right into business. 00:04:21.950 --> 00:04:24.230 Testing is still confusing. 00:04:24.230 --> 00:04:28.511 Please remember, if you have symptoms or think you may have been exposed to Covid-19, call 00:04:28.511 --> 00:04:30.320 Student Health and Wellness. 00:04:30.320 --> 00:04:34.130 You will have a brief assessment and if you meet the criteria of a close contact but don’t 00:04:34.130 --> 00:04:38.500 have symptoms, you might be asked to test at a satellite location on Grounds. 00:04:38.500 --> 00:04:42.560 If you are determined to have symptoms, you will be tested at Student Health.. 00:04:42.560 --> 00:04:46.350 Student Health and Wellness appointment availability and test results are generally quicker than 00:04:46.350 --> 00:04:51.200 other testing sites in town and, remember, you won’t get in trouble for testing positive 00:04:51.200 --> 00:04:54.340 or for information shared in the contact tracing process. 00:04:54.340 --> 00:04:59.070 Choosing to test elsewhere may also impact the number of tests available for Charlottesville 00:04:59.070 --> 00:05:03.100 residents, including front line workers in the community, You don’t want to be taking 00:05:03.100 --> 00:05:06.270 a test from a Charlottesville resident who really needs it. 00:05:06.270 --> 00:05:10.840 Also, remember if you attend a UVA Health System sponsored community testing event as 00:05:10.840 --> 00:05:15.540 a UVA student, you will be referred back to Student Health, so save yourself a trip and 00:05:15.540 --> 00:05:17.480 call SHW first. 00:05:17.480 --> 00:05:21.870 If you believe you have been exposed to the virus, you should quarantine by yourself for 00:05:21.870 --> 00:05:26.840 14 days after the last day you were exposed to the person with COVID-19 even if you test 00:05:26.840 --> 00:05:27.940 negative. 00:05:27.940 --> 00:05:32.210 You can still develop the disease after your test date, within that 14 day timeframe, so 00:05:32.210 --> 00:05:35.970 let’s make sure we’re not spreading the virus to friends, family, and the Charlottesville 00:05:35.970 --> 00:05:37.430 community unknowingly. 00:05:37.430 --> 00:05:42.210 We’ll talk more about quarantine next week, but check the Student Health and Wellness 00:05:42.210 --> 00:05:47.240 site for more info about how to quarantine safely, especially if you are off Grounds 00:05:47.240 --> 00:05:48.830 and living with roommates. 00:05:48.830 --> 00:05:51.650 Now as many sports are starting up and the football team is looking forward to a new 00:05:51.650 --> 00:05:56.840 home opener with Duke, some of our student-athletes have and important message to share more important 00:05:56.840 --> 00:05:58.720 than any Tech game. 00:05:58.720 --> 00:06:05.110 Groundskeepers, how it started, we were having deep and good conversations with our team. 00:06:05.110 --> 00:06:08.410 We were definitely trying to find ways on how can we make change in our team and in 00:06:08.410 --> 00:06:10.600 the community and inevitably the world. 00:06:10.600 --> 00:06:13.170 The Groundskeepers is protecting our Grounds, it’s where we live. 00:06:13.170 --> 00:06:16.520 When the white nationalists came here which almost like took over our grounds. 00:06:16.520 --> 00:06:17.620 We’re trying to take it back. 00:06:17.620 --> 00:06:19.720 Back for UVA but also the city. 00:06:19.720 --> 00:06:24.030 We’re trying to empower the city to take those days back and that negative connotation 00:06:24.030 --> 00:06:28.571 away from those days just so it turns almost into a celebration of not what happened, but 00:06:28.571 --> 00:06:32.730 how we responded to it and the response of all the good things Charlottesville is. 00:06:32.730 --> 00:06:38.520 We’re continuously trying to find ways now to, how can we impact our teammates and ourselves. 00:06:38.520 --> 00:06:42.680 How can we change ourselves right now and try to take some growth in the next couple 00:06:42.680 --> 00:06:43.680 weeks? 00:06:43.910 --> 00:06:47.760 My responsibility is my passion and that is my players and so on and off the field who 00:06:47.770 --> 00:06:49.670 they become is really important to me. 00:06:49.670 --> 00:06:54.620 So whether that’s a first-round draft pick, whether that’s a successful father, successful 00:06:54.620 --> 00:06:57.720 husband working a job to provide for a family. 00:06:57.720 --> 00:06:59.560 Those are both one in the same. 00:06:59.560 --> 00:07:03.100 Making sure they graduate, making sure they make their family proud. 00:07:03.100 --> 00:07:07.890 As those things merge off the field, with the Groundskeepers with Jana, when you talk 00:07:07.890 --> 00:07:13.360 about an amazing leader and an amazing person, it’s been such a joy to be a part of what 00:07:13.360 --> 00:07:16.300 we’re trying to bring change for as far as the Groundskeepers. 00:07:16.300 --> 00:07:19.960 So basically, just recognizing things that have happened in the past to the University 00:07:19.960 --> 00:07:23.360 protecting today and working to create a better future for tomorrow. 00:07:23.360 --> 00:07:27.930 And so through education, learning about the past, learning where we are as a country and 00:07:27.930 --> 00:07:32.410 the things that we can work on to correct and promote a better future and so, with the 00:07:32.410 --> 00:07:36.130 march just trying to do things that will help bridge the gap between the University and 00:07:36.130 --> 00:07:39.390 the community and so everybody feels as one, a part of one. 00:07:39.390 --> 00:07:42.781 We will hopefully bring change and not just right initially but things that’ll change 00:07:42.781 --> 00:07:44.740 and create a lasting legacy. 00:07:52.200 --> 00:07:56.080 In more positive news, the Board of Visitors voted to endorse proposals set out by the 00:07:56.080 --> 00:08:00.450 racial equity task force brought together this summer after the brutal killing of George 00:08:00.450 --> 00:08:03.970 Floyd, Breonna Taylor and so many others. 00:08:03.970 --> 00:08:07.750 The violence against black people and largely marginalized groups is embedded in 400 years 00:08:07.750 --> 00:08:13.020 of racism and hate in this country, and we must educate ourselves by unpacking the history 00:08:13.020 --> 00:08:18.480 of statues, monuments, and the history of this very university so we can fight for a 00:08:18.480 --> 00:08:20.150 better future. 00:08:20.150 --> 00:08:24.860 The Board also approved resolutions to contextualize the statue of Thomas Jefferson in front of 00:08:24.860 --> 00:08:29.810 the Rotunda, remove and relocate the racist George Rogers Clark statue, and approved other 00:08:29.810 --> 00:08:33.669 measures to rename and reclaim the University’s landscape. 00:08:33.669 --> 00:08:40.300 Thank you to the students, staff, and faculty who protested and petitioned for these changes, 00:08:40.300 --> 00:08:43.360 These efforts are long overdue and I hope that they continue. 00:08:43.360 --> 00:08:46.899 And after my shout out for a dining app last week, I found out that dining has partnered 00:08:46.899 --> 00:08:51.020 with the app delivery service Good Uncle to provide meals throughout Grounds, and you 00:08:51.020 --> 00:08:52.949 can even use your flex dollars. 00:08:52.949 --> 00:08:57.120 The dining halls are open with to-go options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and students 00:08:57.120 --> 00:09:00.959 can pre-order using Grubhub or stop by The Forum at O’Hill, at a separate entrance 00:09:00.959 --> 00:09:05.389 away from the dining hall line, to pick up a prepared meal to-go. 00:09:05.389 --> 00:09:09.279 Dining also has reusable bags to take multiple meals to-go at once for students who would 00:09:09.279 --> 00:09:11.610 like to limit their visits to the dining rooms. 00:09:11.610 --> 00:09:14.990 Check out the UVA Dining website to view hours of operations and menus. 00:09:14.990 --> 00:09:20.230 Finally, Dr. Mitch Rosner will talk about some updates to Â鶹Æƽâ°æ COVID tracker. 00:09:20.230 --> 00:09:25.790 Today, I wanted to review with you some changes to the UVA COVID Tracker, but before doing 00:09:25.790 --> 00:09:29.829 that, I wanted to give you an update on some recent events that I’m sure are on your 00:09:29.829 --> 00:09:31.620 minds and you may have heard about. 00:09:31.620 --> 00:09:35.930 Under the direction of Dr. Amy Mathers, we have been testing wastewater that comes from 00:09:35.930 --> 00:09:37.779 some of the dormitories. 00:09:37.779 --> 00:09:42.529 Over the last couple of days, we’ve noticed that one dormitory has been positive as well 00:09:42.529 --> 00:09:44.269 as having several cases. 00:09:44.269 --> 00:09:48.459 Last night, we went into that dormitory and have tested all students and are awaiting 00:09:48.459 --> 00:09:49.459 the results. 00:09:49.459 --> 00:09:53.509 I think this also highlights the need for continued vigilance in terms of the public 00:09:53.509 --> 00:09:55.920 health measures that you know so well. 00:09:55.920 --> 00:10:01.199 Those include face-mask wearing, social distancing, and good and frequent hand hygiene. 00:10:01.199 --> 00:10:05.360 If we have learned anything, this virus is very opportunistic and takes advantage whenever 00:10:05.360 --> 00:10:10.940 we let down our guards, so please remain vigilant in those public health measures, they clearly 00:10:10.940 --> 00:10:12.180 make a big difference. 00:10:12.180 --> 00:10:17.370 The UVA COVID Tracker will be undergoing some changes in response to our evolving knowledge 00:10:17.370 --> 00:10:19.080 and continued feedback. 00:10:19.080 --> 00:10:23.649 Now to give you some updates around what changes you can expect in the COVID Tracker. 00:10:23.649 --> 00:10:25.360 These include several different features. 00:10:25.360 --> 00:10:29.149 We will now show enhanced data on UVA testing. 00:10:29.149 --> 00:10:33.800 This will show the number of tests that have been performed on a day, as well as the positive 00:10:33.800 --> 00:10:36.829 tests broken down for students and employees. 00:10:36.829 --> 00:10:41.009 You will see data from the past week as well to show trends in that data. 00:10:41.009 --> 00:10:46.300 We are also including daily averages of new cases so that you can see this data as well. 00:10:46.300 --> 00:10:50.620 And perhaps most importantly, we’re showing you the number of active cases. 00:10:50.620 --> 00:10:51.809 What is an active case? 00:10:51.809 --> 00:10:57.300 An active case is a case that’s been detected in the last 10 days with a positive test and 00:10:57.300 --> 00:11:00.749 is required isolation either on or off Grounds. 00:11:00.749 --> 00:11:05.839 In addition, we’re continuing to show hospital statistics in terms of hospitalizations for 00:11:05.839 --> 00:11:11.270 patients with COVID and we’re also continuing to show you the isolation and quarantine capacity 00:11:11.270 --> 00:11:12.800 and usage. 00:11:12.800 --> 00:11:17.129 We hope that you’ll find this data useful and this data will also continue to evolve 00:11:17.129 --> 00:11:21.439 as we continue to learn more and respond to your feedback on the information that you 00:11:21.439 --> 00:11:22.829 want to see. 00:11:22.829 --> 00:11:24.540 Thank you. 00:11:24.540 --> 00:11:27.009 Wanna share some of your good news in the UVA Weekly? 00:11:27.009 --> 00:11:31.649 Hit us up with cool stuff your org is doing to stay safe during Covid, or to build community, 00:11:31.649 --> 00:11:34.069 or to help the Charlottesville community in this difficult time. 00:11:34.069 --> 00:11:37.120 Email us at youva@virginia.edu 00:11:39.209 --> 00:11:43.680 When I think back to my happiest memories, very very few of them were spent totally 00:11:43.680 --> 00:11:44.790 by myself. 00:11:44.790 --> 00:11:49.399 I have had the opportunity to meet some of the best friends I'm ever gonna have in my 00:11:49.399 --> 00:11:50.399 life. 00:11:50.399 --> 00:11:55.879 My time at UVA has been revolving around social experiences, it's about people that I met 00:11:55.879 --> 00:11:58.300 and fun stuff that we did together. 00:11:58.300 --> 00:12:02.279 I remember one night, my salsa group and I, instead of practicing a dance which we'd been 00:12:02.279 --> 00:12:07.220 spending hours on all semester, we decided instead just to turn on some music and improvise. 00:12:07.220 --> 00:12:11.110 We ended up spending hours that night dancing the night away. 00:12:11.110 --> 00:12:16.360 I remember one time my friends and I during finals got a booth and we just spent hours 00:12:16.360 --> 00:12:20.829 and hours just studying there and in order to like commemorate the moment we walked into 00:12:20.829 --> 00:12:24.629 1515, went to the photo booth and just took a picture. 00:12:24.629 --> 00:12:28.910 I remember I was approached by a guy in my class who said he had just gotten his pilot's 00:12:28.910 --> 00:12:33.790 license, so I met up with him and two other strangers and we just flew around Central 00:12:33.790 --> 00:12:36.189 Virginia that same day that he asked me. 00:12:36.189 --> 00:12:40.209 It was kind of just this spontaneous, spur-of-the-moment experience. 00:12:40.209 --> 00:12:45.790 I put way more value into that memory now than I did before the coronavirus started 00:12:45.790 --> 00:12:50.300 just because something like that is just so unimaginable today. 00:12:50.300 --> 00:12:55.190 Thinking of those memories, it inspires hope in people and without hope we can't go anywhere. 00:12:55.190 --> 00:12:59.350 Every student is feeling the exact same way, everybody's missing out on the same exact 00:12:59.350 --> 00:13:04.230 things, but working together as a group, as a community hopefully, those memories that 00:13:04.230 --> 00:13:06.100 we've missed out on, those will come back. 00:13:06.100 --> 00:13:08.540 There's not one big thing we can all do. 00:13:08.540 --> 00:13:11.180 It's a lot of little things that are gonna add up. 00:13:11.180 --> 00:13:14.569 It's sitting a little bit farther away on the Lawn from your friends. 00:13:14.569 --> 00:13:17.839 It's not sharing a drink, it's not sharing your lunch. 00:13:17.839 --> 00:13:21.730 Moving forward, we just have to focus on the things we can do. 00:13:21.730 --> 00:13:24.720 We can wear masks, we can separate ourselves. 00:13:24.720 --> 00:13:29.119 I can't say we're gonna be in the football stadium 30 thousand people this year, I can't 00:13:29.119 --> 00:13:32.240 say that but I can say I can care about the person next to me. 00:13:32.240 --> 00:13:34.269 I have the power to do that. 00:13:34.269 --> 00:13:36.380 Every single day we don't know what's going to come next. 00:13:36.380 --> 00:13:40.689 We don't know how this is gonna end, when this is gonna to end, but we do know that 00:13:40.689 --> 00:13:42.300 it's gonna change. 00:13:42.300 --> 00:13:46.649 I obviously want to create more happy moments in my life. 00:13:46.649 --> 00:13:52.709 And so, really all I can do is look forward to having more of these moments in the future. 00:13:52.709 --> 00:13:58.129 We hold on to hope because hope is the one thing that keeps us going when we can't see 00:13:58.129 --> 00:13:59.379 what's on the other side. 00:13:59.379 --> 00:14:06.160 If we can do this right we can be the hope for education that we can come back and be 00:14:06.160 --> 00:14:07.829 safe and keep others safe. 00:14:07.829 --> 00:14:10.481 We have the opportunity to give the country some hope. 00:14:10.481 --> 00:14:12.481
