Yeah, there are a couple of things I would say. One is there is this mathematical, computational part of it. You've got to have your calculus. Your multivariate calculus. You've got to have matrix algebra, linear algebra. You've got to understand probability and statistics. But not to be overwhelmed by that, and to think also get involved with an area that has some data that you love to work with, and just play with data.
Find data sets available on the web in areas that you're interested in. Like, something about music reviews, or politics, voting behavior. And don't be afraid. Don't be afraid to break things. Don't be afraid of not knowing enough. Don't feel that just because you're coming from being an English or history major that you can't learn these things. Yeah, those are the two things I would say is play with data and make sure you learn those foundational fields.
