WEBVTT Kind: captions Language: en 00:00:03.250 --> 00:00:06.220 Hi everyone, I hope you’re all having a good week. 00:00:06.220 --> 00:00:09.270 Welcome to the fourth episode of UVA Weekly. 00:00:09.270 --> 00:00:12.760 If you’re tuning in for the first time, thanks for joining us. 00:00:12.760 --> 00:00:17.410 We started this show as a way to communicate primarily with our students about the latest 00:00:17.410 --> 00:00:23.050 on COVID-19 and this very unusual semester, though we hope the information we share here 00:00:23.050 --> 00:00:26.060 will be useful to other audiences as well. 00:00:26.060 --> 00:00:31.109 Let me start with a quick review of the numbers: At the time we’re recording this on Wednesday, 00:00:31.109 --> 00:00:37.430 we have 224 active cases, meaning new cases with a positive test result in the past 00:00:37.430 --> 00:00:40.960 10 days that require isolation on or off Grounds. 00:00:40.960 --> 00:00:45.430 This active cases number is the most critical, since it gives a sense of what we’re managing 00:00:45.430 --> 00:00:46.780 at any given time. 00:00:46.780 --> 00:00:52.270 Right now, 5% of the isolation space we’ve set aside for students who test positive is 00:00:52.270 --> 00:00:58.710 occupied, as is 29% of the quarantine space we’ve reserved for close contacts. 00:00:58.710 --> 00:01:03.020 With the help of our public health experts, we’re carefully tracking key metrics to 00:01:03.020 --> 00:01:09.310 make sure the new guidelines we put in place last week around gatherings, masking, and travel are 00:01:09.310 --> 00:01:11.950 helping us to stay a step ahead of the virus. 00:01:11.950 --> 00:01:16.950 Thanks to all of you for your patience, understanding, and compliance with these new and hopefully 00:01:16.950 --> 00:01:18.780 temporary restrictions. 00:01:18.780 --> 00:01:23.509 As you know, we have also ramped up our testing, and you’ll see saliva testing beginning 00:01:23.509 --> 00:01:25.670 to happen this week around Grounds. 00:01:25.670 --> 00:01:30.121 This will allow us to expand testing in a quick and non-invasive way, and you'll see 00:01:30.121 --> 00:01:33.610 a video about the process later on in this episode. 00:01:33.610 --> 00:01:36.770 If you’re asked to submit a test, please do so. 00:01:36.770 --> 00:01:40.671 And I’ll say something I’ve said before, but it bears repeating: you will not get in 00:01:40.671 --> 00:01:42.659 trouble for testing positive. 00:01:42.659 --> 00:01:47.159 On a different note, I have heard that a number of you are asking how you can get 00:01:47.159 --> 00:01:50.970 involved in Charlottesville and the surrounding communities, and I applaud your interest. 00:01:50.970 --> 00:01:55.220 In addition to the organizations you’re familiar with already – Madison House and 00:01:55.220 --> 00:02:00.340 service-focused CIOs – the website you are hopefully seeing on the screen right now is 00:02:00.340 --> 00:02:05.360 a great resource—it lists and describes a number of volunteer opportunities. 00:02:05.360 --> 00:02:09.610 This site was originally designed for UVA employees, but the opportunities are open 00:02:09.610 --> 00:02:13.560 to anyone, and there are some great ideas of ways you can get involved. 00:02:13.560 --> 00:02:19.400 I realize we’re entering midterm season, which can be a stressful time even under normal 00:02:19.400 --> 00:02:20.400 circumstances. 00:02:20.400 --> 00:02:24.220 Over the next few weeks, it’s going to be important to take care of yourselves, both 00:02:24.220 --> 00:02:28.290 physically and mentally, and you’ll be hearing more about how to do that a bit later in the 00:02:28.290 --> 00:02:29.290 show. 00:02:29.290 --> 00:02:30.550 That’s it for me this week. 00:02:30.550 --> 00:02:35.080 Thanks for watching, and please keep up the good work in following our guidelines around 00:02:35.080 --> 00:02:38.880 masking, distancing, and gathering to keep this semester on track. 00:02:38.880 --> 00:02:43.000 I understand that Cavman made it down to the Corner this weekend and had good things to 00:02:43.000 --> 00:02:47.780 report about the number of people wearing masks, keeping groups to 5 or fewer people, 00:02:47.780 --> 00:02:52.670 and staying 6 feet apart from each other – thanks again to all of you for doing your part. 00:02:52.670 --> 00:02:54.590 It will make all the difference. 00:02:54.590 --> 00:03:00.450 Now, as usual, it is my pleasure to turn things over to the inimitable Davion Zeno. 00:03:00.450 --> 00:03:01.780 Thanks Jim. 00:03:01.780 --> 00:03:04.830 Wassup Guys, Zeno here and I’m back like I left something. 00:03:04.830 --> 00:03:09.349 Coming to you with the #YouVA team to talk all things COVID and news on grounds. 00:03:09.349 --> 00:03:12.340 As Jim mentioned, we’ve got another testing program starting up at UVA. 00:03:12.340 --> 00:03:14.940 I promise this one isn’t as invasive as the nasal swab. 00:03:14.940 --> 00:03:18.020 Let’s learn a little bit more about it. 00:03:18.020 --> 00:03:23.370 As part of pandemic control on Grounds, we are doing several tests. 00:03:23.370 --> 00:03:28.980 We have nasal swab tests; we are doing the wastewater testing, and this is one additional 00:03:28.980 --> 00:03:34.440 tool that we have added that is specific to individuals that we can identify fairly quickly. 00:03:34.440 --> 00:03:40.080 We will have designated places for saliva sample collection. 00:03:40.080 --> 00:03:44.730 So, students have to go there, they’ll have to bring their ID and once their ID is scanned, 00:03:44.730 --> 00:03:51.400 they will be given a tube and gently drool into this test tube. 00:03:51.400 --> 00:03:56.209 And there will be a staff member with a biohazard bag, and you drop it in the bag and that’s 00:03:56.209 --> 00:03:59.310 all the students have to do. 00:03:59.310 --> 00:04:05.430 Spitting in the tube is straightforward, it’s easy and another thing compared with the nasal 00:04:05.430 --> 00:04:11.709 swab is the nasal swab protocol requires extraction of this virus which causes potential safety 00:04:11.709 --> 00:04:13.000 concerns. 00:04:13.000 --> 00:04:17.920 This procedure we don’t even open the tube we heat inactivate it and then people will 00:04:17.920 --> 00:04:19.519 go in there and take out samples. 00:04:19.519 --> 00:04:23.550 So, we skipped a couple procedures, it’s safer and it’s quicker. 00:04:23.550 --> 00:04:27.010 People that are positive, but they don’t know that they are carrying the virus, if 00:04:27.010 --> 00:04:32.840 you identify them soon enough and ask them to isolate so they no longer are disseminating 00:04:32.840 --> 00:04:34.530 the virus to others. 00:04:34.530 --> 00:04:39.139 So that is the whole point of doing this and the faster you can detect the faster you can 00:04:39.140 --> 00:04:43.120 do this isolation and quarantine. 00:04:47.360 --> 00:04:49.990 That definitely looks more pleasant than a nasal swab. 00:04:49.990 --> 00:04:53.010 Students who are selected for testing will be notified by email and should proceed to 00:04:53.010 --> 00:04:55.030 a screening location on Grounds. 00:04:55.030 --> 00:04:56.730 The test only takes a few minutes. 00:04:56.730 --> 00:05:02.180 Over the last couple of weeks, we have been spewing facts, -- yeah, I know I have on a 00:05:02.180 --> 00:05:03.180 polo. 00:05:03.180 --> 00:05:07.640 It’s mid-term season, I am looking for jobs, grades coming in kind of wild, I'm tired but 00:05:07.640 --> 00:05:09.910 we are here and that’s important. 00:05:09.910 --> 00:05:14.800 Like I said we have mostly been talking facts, stats, and procedures about COVID-19 which 00:05:14.800 --> 00:05:18.000 is helpful but this week we are taking a different approach. 00:05:18.000 --> 00:05:21.120 This segment is all about Self Care or Self Love. 00:05:21.120 --> 00:05:25.300 Here’s three small actions you can do to mind your mental health during this time. 00:05:25.300 --> 00:05:26.300 One, 00:05:26.300 --> 00:05:27.430 reduce time on your phone. 00:05:27.430 --> 00:05:31.550 We have been spending so much time on screens, it’s getting ridiculous. 00:05:31.550 --> 00:05:35.320 If you turn on your phone’s greyscale, the grayscale mutes the colors, tricking our minds 00:05:35.320 --> 00:05:37.830 to not engage because it's less pretty. 00:05:37.830 --> 00:05:38.960 Two, 00:05:38.960 --> 00:05:40.460 please adopt a solid sleeping schedule. 00:05:40.460 --> 00:05:46.040 I don't know who made it cool to pull all-nighters to do work, but I know they are evil. 00:05:46.040 --> 00:05:48.310 You should get 7-9 hours of sleep daily. 00:05:48.310 --> 00:05:52.889 Also, during the hour before bed: put down remotes, laptops, and phones. 00:05:52.889 --> 00:05:56.880 Try reading a book, meditating, or reflecting on the things that you are grateful for. 00:05:56.880 --> 00:05:59.550 This will help you truly be out like a light. 00:05:59.550 --> 00:06:01.990 Lastly, get outside or exercise. 00:06:01.990 --> 00:06:05.810 The AFC, Mem gym, and Slaughter are open, and they are in compliance with all safety 00:06:05.810 --> 00:06:06.810 precautions. 00:06:06.810 --> 00:06:12.419 There is a whole system they have and trust me it is poetry in motion. 00:06:12.419 --> 00:06:15.520 Exploring O-Hill trails can be a fun time and its right here on grounds. 00:06:15.520 --> 00:06:18.030 Also, eating balanced meals is important. 00:06:18.030 --> 00:06:22.080 Nothing but mac and cheese for dinner isn't okay but also don’t ask me what I had for 00:06:22.080 --> 00:06:23.370 dinner last night. 00:06:23.370 --> 00:06:26.900 You can find more tips on how to navigate this socially distanced world on the Student 00:06:26.900 --> 00:06:29.710 Health website under Guides for Well-being at UVA. 00:06:29.710 --> 00:06:33.530 Let’s hear what some other student have to say about taking care of ourselves and 00:06:33.530 --> 00:06:34.919 one another. 00:06:34.919 --> 00:06:37.460 Hi everyone, I’m Naeha and I’m a fourth-year at UVA. 00:06:37.460 --> 00:06:41.750 Today we’re going to be walking around Grounds and seeing how students are handling life 00:06:41.750 --> 00:06:46.180 during a pandemic, but first let’s make sure we’re 6 feet apart. 00:06:49.240 --> 00:06:53.180 So what have you been able to do to see friends and socialize? 00:06:53.180 --> 00:07:00.270 I live in a house with seven other people, so we’re having a Hunger Games to see which 00:07:00.270 --> 00:07:06.760 five can stay and I just hang out with people at a distance if I can in outside spaces. 00:07:06.760 --> 00:07:11.970 I’ve mostly been seeing people one-on-one, so I’ve had a lot of socially distanced 00:07:11.970 --> 00:07:14.850 outside Lawn lunches with a lot of friends. 00:07:14.850 --> 00:07:20.450 We started inventing a couple croquet sports, we actually have a kickball and we hit a kickball 00:07:20.450 --> 00:07:24.220 with mallets, I don’t know if that’s an official sport yet but definitely coming out 00:07:24.220 --> 00:07:25.220 soon. 00:07:25.220 --> 00:07:29.230 We’ve been having movie nights on the weekends, walking around Grounds and just being able 00:07:29.230 --> 00:07:32.699 to enjoy it and reminisce has also been special in its own way. 00:07:32.699 --> 00:07:36.560 So, my dog, his name is Leo he’s a Pomeranian/Husky. 00:07:36.560 --> 00:07:39.590 Never thought I would actually get a dog, but quarantine happened, and I was like, I 00:07:39.590 --> 00:07:44.630 have a lot of time to take care of a puppy and help train him. 00:07:44.630 --> 00:07:45.630 [LAUGHING] 00:07:45.630 --> 00:07:48.560 Do you have a message for the people? 00:07:48.560 --> 00:07:54.130 Just try to remain optimistic, even for myself that’s really hard but eventually this thing 00:07:54.130 --> 00:07:55.380 will hopefully end. 00:07:55.380 --> 00:07:57.920 We’re all a community and we’re all affected by this. 00:07:57.920 --> 00:08:01.599 This is not a good time for anyone and it’s really hard, but our friends are there for 00:08:01.599 --> 00:08:03.840 us even when we don’t feel their immediate presence. 00:08:03.840 --> 00:08:12.979 Yeah, stay hopeful and stay 6 feet apart and wear your mask, it’s true, it's true. 00:08:12.979 --> 00:08:17.440 Nicole Ruzek, the director of Counseling and Psychological Services, or CAPS, also has 00:08:17.440 --> 00:08:19.819 some suggestions for students who are struggling. 00:08:19.819 --> 00:08:24.630 CAPS is offering virtual counseling services to all students, in addition to crisis support. 00:08:24.630 --> 00:08:30.070 I’m Nicole Ruzek, I’m the Director of Counseling and Psychological Services on Grounds, 00:08:30.070 --> 00:08:31.350 were known as CAPS. 00:08:31.350 --> 00:08:33.680 Obviously, this is been a stressful time for all of us. 00:08:33.680 --> 00:08:38.940 I think for students they’re already facing stress related academics as well as trying 00:08:38.940 --> 00:08:43.969 to form new relationships and adjust to being on Grounds, so doing all the normal student 00:08:43.969 --> 00:08:48.170 things that are already stressful but then having this added level of stress related 00:08:48.170 --> 00:08:50.080 to being in the middle of a pandemic. 00:08:50.080 --> 00:08:54.880 So, this semester at CAPS we’re offering a whole range of services for students. 00:08:54.880 --> 00:09:00.770 We’re offering our normal services, so individual therapy, group therapy, care management services, 00:09:00.770 --> 00:09:06.269 psychiatric services, consultation and outreach, crisis services, all of those things were 00:09:06.269 --> 00:09:07.769 offering via telehealth. 00:09:07.769 --> 00:09:13.000 We’ve also expanded our group options in order to respond to this moment. 00:09:13.000 --> 00:09:17.580 At CAPS, we really want students to know that we’re open and available whether a student 00:09:17.580 --> 00:09:22.083 wants to do one-on-one individual therapy or connect in a group space or if they would 00:09:22.083 --> 00:09:26.120 like us to come to their organization and provide a workshop on stress management or 00:09:26.120 --> 00:09:30.029 self-care, or if a student is in crisis and needs to talk to someone immediately. 00:09:30.029 --> 00:09:33.640 We really want students to know that we’re here for you, we’re available and we’re 00:09:33.640 --> 00:09:35.100 just a phone call away. 00:09:35.100 --> 00:09:39.700 In current news, election day is slowly creeping upon us and I urge you to get registered to 00:09:39.700 --> 00:09:40.700 vote. 00:09:40.700 --> 00:09:44.930 The deadline to get registered to vote is Oct. 13th for the state of Virginia and election 00:09:44.930 --> 00:09:46.330 will have to 00:10:20.060 --> 00:10:21.940 turn in a voter registration form. 00:10:21.940 --> 00:10:26.560 Here in the 5th District, Democratic Nominee Dr. Cam Webb is taking on Republican nominee
